Thousands March in Minneapolis and Nationwide to Protest ICE Operations Amid Deadly Incidents

On Friday, January 30, 2026, thousands of demonstrators braved sub-freezing temperatures in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, as part of a nationwide "National Shutdown" day of action against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Trump administration's intensified immigration enforcement.

Crowds marched through key areas including Government Plaza, Washington Avenue, and near U.S. Bank Stadium, chanting slogans like “ICE Out” and “Whose streets? Our streets?” while holding signs demanding the removal of federal immigration agents from the state. This marked the second consecutive Friday of massive protests in the city, following a major general strike on January 23 that drew tens of thousands.

### Nationwide Solidarity and Disruption

The actions spread across the U.S., with demonstrations, student walkouts, and business closures reported in cities including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, San Francisco, Portland (Maine), and Washington, D.C. Organizers reported events in up to 46 states and over 250 locations, urging people to boycott work, school, and shopping to "stop funding ICE."

In Minneapolis, a benefit concert featuring Bruce Springsteen (performing his new protest song "Streets of Minneapolis") and Tom Morello supported the families of victims Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

### Triggers: Fatal Shootings and Operation Metro Surge

The protests stem from **Operation Metro Surge**, which deployed around 3,000 ICE and Border Patrol agents to the Minneapolis area for aggressive enforcement, including street patrols and arrests. Key incidents fueling outrage include:

- The fatal shooting of **Renee Good** (a mother of three) by a federal agent on January 7.

- The killing of **Alex Pretti** (a 37-year-old ICU nurse and veteran) by agents later in January.

The Department of Justice has launched a civil rights investigation into Pretti's death. Other reports highlight community disruptions, arrests of long-time residents, and concerns over tactics affecting U.S. citizens.

Protesters, including student groups from the University of Minnesota, labor unions, faith leaders, and grassroots organizations, demand:

- Immediate withdrawal of ICE and CBP from Minnesota.

- Accountability for the shootings.

- Broader reforms, including defunding or abolishing ICE.

The Trump administration defends the operations as targeting criminal illegal immigrants to enhance public safety, with Border Czar Tom Homan indicating shifts toward more targeted actions amid backlash.

Protests are expected to continue over the weekend under slogans like "ICE Out of Everywhere."
